The late President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, was a revolutionary, a freedom fighter, a politician, an adversary, an ally, a hero, and an icon; and that’s just what he was to me.

Satire and Cartoons

South Africa’s most prominent cartoonist has described Nelson Mandela as a man who understood the importance of satire and free speech. Jonathan Shapiro’s drawings appear in the daily newspapers under the pen name “Zapiro”. He earned Mr Mandela’s respect, even though his illustrations were at times critical of the ANC government.

Mandela was many other things to so many people, and not only in his own country but all over the world.
